Brian graduated from Edinburgh University in 1996 and went on to complete a hospital internship at the Liphook Equine Hospital, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Glasgow. He was awarded the RCVS Certificate in Ophthalmology in 2002 and RCVS advanced practitioner status in 2014. Since 2004 has been a full time ophthalmologist in the South West of England and has headed the ophthalmology service at Vale Referrals since 2012. His particular clinical passions are corneal and cataract surgery.
Brian has lectured widely in the UK and abroad, including at the London Vet Show and BEVA Congress, and served on the symposium organising committee of the International Equine Ophthalmology Consortium (IEOC). He also taught ophthalmology at the University of Bristol between 2010 and 2012, and has continued to support postgraduate training through lectures, online CPD, and practical courses. He particularly enjoys practical skills teaching in wetlab settings, where he values the opportunity to help colleagues build confidence in techniques they can take straight back to practice.
His motivation for a career in ophthalmology comes from the unique privilege of restoring or preserving vision and the life-changing impact this has for animals and their owners. Outside of work, Brian enjoys running with his cocker spaniel.
