DERMATOLOGY REFERRAL SERVICE
We specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of skin, hair, ear and nail diseases in domestic animals, largely dogs and cats. This will include allergies and chronic skin conditions and our diagnostic tests include intradermal testing for allergen-specific immunotherapy, cytology, histopathology, cultures, video-otoscopy and middle ear flushing.
Stephanie Hovey BVM, MRCVS PgC Advanced Practitioner Small Animal Dermatology has been a small animal veterinarian since she graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2009.
Stephanie hails from a general practice background, and joins Vale Referrals to focus her interest in dermatology only cases and referrals.
Under the guidance of Dr Stephen Shaw, Stephanie as consulted and investigated a variety of interesting and complex dermatology cases. Her work with Dr Shaw includes referral skin clinics for the Guide Dogs for the Blind, at the Bristol Guide Dog Centre.
We are able to take a multidisciplinary approach to such cases as Total Canal Ablation and Bulla Osteotomy (dogs) and Ventral Bulla Osteotomy (cats) Lateral Wall Resection. Most cases of skin disease are somewhat chronic in nature and require management rather than cure. In cases where a patient has a more complex disease, we are able to offer co-management with our Internal Medicine team, Myra Stevenson and our Surgery team, Michal Vlasin and Richard Artingstall.
With an array of diagnostic equipment such as video-otoscopic assessment for medical management of ear disease which allows a minimally invasive approach for ear flushing and assessment of ear drum and middle ear disease, and with the use of CT for assessment prior to surgery in some cases, Stephanie and her team can offer a tailored dermatological treatment aimed at controlling skin disease from nose to tail.
Referral cases usually have an initial consultation of 1 hour and may have follow up visits depending upon the nature of the skin disease. Following the initial consultation, a written report will be shared with the owner so the recommendations can be discussed with the referring vet. Urgent cases with severe skin disease may merit early discussion with Stephanie before arranging an appointment.
